MeluMimi

One MP3, three actual converted files

Compare the same 30-second input with three files produced by the MeluMimi conversion code. These downloads are the actual outputs, with their settings and file sizes shown.

MP3 input

30-second CC0 music excerpt; a 192 kbps playback transcode, not a lossless master. File size: 721,649 bytes.

Converted outputs

01

WAV · PCM 16-bit

Uncompressed 16-bit PCM. Convenient for editing; converting an MP3 to WAV does not restore missing audio detail.

5,292,078 bytes · 44.1 kHz · stereo

Download this output

02

FLAC · 24-bit

Lossless 24-bit output of the decoded audio. Smaller than this WAV, but the input was still lossy MP3.

3,097,487 bytes · 44.1 kHz · stereo

03

M4A · AAC 192 kbps

A new AAC 192 kbps lossy encode. Similar file size here does not mean better sound; another encode may add loss.

733,578 bytes · 44.1 kHz · stereo

How to convert MP3 to WAV, FLAC or M4A with MeluMimi

Use the downloads above to compare one actual input, then choose settings for your own file. This guide describes the website workflow; the published example files were generated locally with the conversion code.

  1. Open the audio converter and choose an audio file you own or are authorized to convert.

  2. Choose WAV, FLAC or M4A (AAC), then a quality offered for that format. To match the example settings, select WAV PCM 16-bit, FLAC Standard or M4A AAC 192 kbps.

  3. Keep the original sample rate and channels unless your destination requires another setting. A higher sample rate or bit depth does not restore details missing from an MP3.

  4. Review the current free allowance or paid conversion-credit information, convert, then download the delivered file. Repeat separately if you need another output format; each completed conversion has its own allowance or credit rules.

Which output format should I choose?

MP3 → WAV

Choose uncompressed PCM when your editing workflow requires it. Our 30-second, 44.1 kHz stereo PCM 16-bit example is 5,292,078 bytes. A larger file is not proof of improved sound.

MP3 → FLAC

Choose lossless compression when you want to retain the decoded audio without another lossy encode. Our 24-bit example is 3,097,487 bytes. It is not a lossless version of the original recording before MP3 compression.

MP3 → M4A (AAC)

Choose AAC when your destination accepts M4A and you want a compact delivery file. Our AAC 192 kbps example is 733,578 bytes. Check compatibility and listen: lossy re-encoding can change the sound.

Common conversion questions

Does converting MP3 to WAV or FLAC improve quality?

No. The output can preserve the decoded MP3 for editing or storage, but cannot recover information already removed. Keep the original file as well.

Will 24-bit or a higher sample rate recover more detail?

No. Select settings for the software or device that will receive the file. The WAV and FLAC examples use different bit depths, so they are not presented as byte-identical PCM.

Why does the M4A show a slightly different duration?

MP3 and AAC encoding can add padding, and players can report container durations differently. Our source reports about 30.041 seconds and the M4A about 30.023 seconds; this is not a quality score.

Does format conversion remove vocals or background noise?

No. It changes encoding and output settings. Use the separate stem separator for vocals or instruments, or speech denoising for background noise. Piano transcription returns MIDI, not a cleaned audio file.

Need a different output?

Separate vocals and instruments · Reduce speech background noise · Turn piano audio or video into MIDI

Source and method

The Free Music Archive lists Stumble Bee's “Lay down the law” as CC0 1.0. This MP3 excerpt was made from its official recording. We ran the same input through MeluMimi's audio-format conversion code using the displayed output settings, with source sample rate and stereo channels preserved. Conversion ran locally, not through the website upload and task flow.

What this comparison does not prove

WAV and FLAC cannot recover audio information already lost in the MP3 input. The M4A is another lossy encode. File sizes are measured for this excerpt and these settings, not a universal ratio. Container durations can differ slightly because of MP3/AAC padding; this is not a listening-quality score.
